Escape on a road trip across the wide-open spaces of Saskatchewan and experience the province's remote lodges and even a working cattle ranch. Truly escape from the crowds, enjoy nature, the national parks, and outdoor activities.

NOTE: This Self-Drive tour can be customized to start at and include different lodges. This road trip can also be tailored to start in Alberta, Saskatchewan, or even in Manitoba with some changes to the order.

Day 1: Arrive at Elk Ridge Resort

Elk Ridge Resort is Saskatchewan's premier all-season resort, located in a friendly, luxurious setting in the heart of the Central Saskatchewan boreal forest not far from Prince Albert. Championship golf, an excellent spa, fine dining, and outdoor experiences are available in plenty at the Elk Ridge and in the surrounding areas of the Lakeland region and Prince Albert National Park. The Resort was awarded the TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence and recognized as a Reader's Digest Top 9 Must See Canadian Winter Destinations.

Day 2: Elk Ridge Resort

With three championship 9 hole golf courses, 2 restaurants, trails, and the entrance to Prince Albert National Park a short distance away, you have the entire day of activities of choice. The main beach and the National Park Visitor Centre at Lake Waskesiu is only 9 kms away.

Day 3: Elk Ridge Resort to Otter Lake area (Thompson Lodge)

Less than a 3 hrs drive north and situated in the Churchill River System on Otter Lake is Thompson’s Resort with 35 rental cabins from bachelor suites to group cabins housing 24 or more. Each of the units comes equipped with a kitchenette, stocked with basic items, a BBQ and bathrooms. Thompson's Resort hosts an onsite restaurant with dine in and cabin delivery options, conference facilities and for grocery needs, the Churchill River Trading Post is located just across the street. Thompson’s Resort is the departure point to visit our outpost camps, day fly out lakes and departures for Twin Falls Lodge. The Resort is located right in Missinipe on Otter Lake and is accessible by a mostly paved road 80 Km north of La Ronge.

Day 4: Otter Lake area

A full day to relax or opt for activities like, guided canoe and hiking adventures besides other opportunities to unplug and unwind at the Lodge nestled in the heart of the Boreal Forest.

Day 5: Otter Lake area to Saskatoon

Drive with stops in La Ronge and Prince Albert to St Denis near Saskatoon for your overnight stay at the Champetre County. The Howling Coyote Saloon offers rooms complete with country décor in an intimate setting. With private deck overlooking the Special Occasion Garden and large luxurious bathrooms, these rooms will exceed your expectations. All the accommodations can be paired with any number of meal or activities to make your stay unique and memorable. If you are seeking a more pastoral atmosphere, you can book the restored Eatons’ house which allows guests two guest rooms upstairs, each with a double bed, and additional living space on the main floor with plenty of room for socializing.

Day 6: Saskatoon to Alive Sky Lodge

Established in 1995 by Arthur and Thérèse Denis is currently managed by their daughter Francine Edmondson, this vacation farm offers guests a taste of the western era. Following in the family values of Denis, the present owner likes to introduce people to the Saskatchewan Prairies, a place they call home.There’s an old homestead full of antiques to simulate curiosity and forgotten memories or you can try your hand at the well-known Lost Corral Maze, featured in the Amazing Race Canada in 2019. For an extra challenge, try the maze at night.For a taste of city life, drive to nearby Saskatoon and visit the Remai Modern Gallery, take the Prairie Lily River Cruise on the South Saskatchewan River, and sample some excellent farm to fork cuisine that Saskatoon town centre restaurants have become famous for.

Day 7: Alive Sky Lodge to La Reata Ranch

Drive 3 hrs southwest to the La Reata Ranch on the shore of the South Saskatchewan River. The area around the ranch is steeped in ranching traditions and prairie history. Experience the rodeo trail and the life of competing cowboys firsthand at nearby small towns. Riding, roping, cowboy cookouts on the range, bonfires under the stars, the magnificent scenery, and the down-home hospitality of La Reata Ranch has left past guests with memories that are treasured for a lifetime. What always remain constant here are the glorious sunrises, the spectacular sunsets, the feel of the wind on your face as you ride the open trails, and the peace of mind only a cowboy can enjoy.

Day 9: La Reata Ranch to The Crossing at Grasslands National Park

Head south to Val Marie, just outside the Grasslands National Park, a Dark Sky Preserve. Grasslands National Park is the only one of Canadian national parks that represents prairie grasslands, and where you will find the wild plains bison. The park's West Block can be accessed near the village of Val Marie on Hwy #4 and Hwy #18 a one-and-a-half-hour drive south of Swift Current. All accesses to both blocks of Grasslands National Park are by gravel road only. Get details from the Park Visitor Centre and then overnight stay at the Crossing at the Grasslands in near Val Marie Leave noise and traffic behind and experience The Crossing, your gateway to the wide-open, awe-inspiring expanse of Canada’s only nationally protected grasslands. The Crossing is located on 80 acres neighboring Grasslands National Park in Southwest Saskatchewan and offers a quiet and stunningly beautiful retreat-like setting embraced by grassy, rolling hills and wild prairie skies with direct access to the park for solo hikes and meanders.Their three suites are fully self-contained with luxurious beds, pressed linens, private bathrooms, and well stocked kitchenettes / kitchen. Guests enjoy balconies overlooking the park and pond; these are great for morning coffees and wildlife viewing.Leave your windows open and fall asleep to a chorus of coyotes. Wake to birdsong and the big-sky prairie sun rising over the buttes. Explore the rolling prairie and lazy course of the Frenchman River valley, where Sitting Bull, fur traders and Northwest Mounted Police crossed over on their way further west. Explore the 20 km self-guided Ecotour Scenic Drive in the West Block to discover stunning landscapes and cultural history and then Unique formations of land and climate have created niches for rare plants, birds and animals including the pronghorn antelope, black tailed prairie dog, burrowing owl, sage grouse, ferruginous hawk, short horned lizard, and prairie rattlesnake. Head home with a ton of memories of a stunningly varied Saskatchewan drive experience.

Yes, it is possible to book triple share accommodations on select trips. Please inquire about this option, as pricing may also vary and it will be subject to availability.

What is the average age of passengers for this tour?

Our tours are suitable for all age demographics. The average age of travelers is typically 45+

I am a solo traveler. Is there a single surcharge?

There are options for single travelers to join most tours. Solo Travelers can choose to pay the single supplement and have their own room throughout the tour. For those willing to share, we also have a Twin Share option that is offered for the majority of our tours. This means you will be sharing the hotel rooms with another single, same gender traveller who also books the Twin Share option. If this is the case, there will be no single supplement charged to either of you. If we are unable to match you with another Twin Share traveler, there may be a single surcharge applied to cover the full cost of the rooms on some of our longer tours. Please enquire before finalizing your booking for full details.

How physically demanding is this tour? Are you able to accommodate people with mobility restrictions/limitations?

This tour has a low level of physical demand, although there may be some activities or sightseeing tours that require walking short distances. Please inquire if you have any mobility restrictions before completing your booking to ensure this tour is right for you.

How much luggage should I bring?

Each passenger may bring one large suitcase and one carry-on bag. The weight limit for this suitcase is 32 kilograms/60 pounds. Baggage handling is provided at the hotels in our tour packages. Please advise our reservations staff if you will be bringing additional items such as a cane, walker or wheelchair. You may also bring one small soft-sided carry-on bag, which should easily fit into the overhead shelf of the coach. Each person is responsible for his/her own carryon luggage. Remember to check your airline baggage restrictions if you are flying, as they may differ from Anderson Vacations Tours guidelines.

What is your recommended spending amount for non-included meals?

The suggested allowance for non-included meals is $40.00 — $60.00 CAD per day (includes tipping).

Can you accommodate passengers with dietary restrictions (food allergies, vegan, vegetarian etc.)?

Yes! There are many meals included on our fully escorted tours. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions at the time of booking so we can ensure there are alternative meal choices and arrangements made for you.

Are gratuities included in the tour cost?

For your convenience, gratuities for local guides and meals stated on the itinerary are included in the price of the tour. For meals not included in your tour package please remember that it is customary to tip your server 15-20% in North America. Gratuities for your Motorcoach Driver and Tour Director are left to your discretion. We recommend $4.00 - $5.00 CAD per person, per day for your Motorcoach Driver and $6.00 - $7.00 CAD per person, per day for your Tour Director. if you can't find your
