Today we will visit Elk Island National Park. Spotting wildlife in Elk Island can be easier during the winter months and cross-country skiing or snowshoeing is a great way to experience the National Park. Elk Island National Park is a UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve and home to Canada’s bison conservation legacy. Just 35 minutes east of Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is the place to see the iconic bison and learn how this magnificent animal was brought back from near extinction. This afternoon we will depart Edmonton across the rolling Alberta countryside to begin our adventure in Jasper. Please note that our transfer from Edmonton to Jasper may be in a coach that may have a few non tour passengers on board.

The Ice Walk in Jasper, Alberta is one of Jasper’s most popular and impressive winter activities. Our guide will take us to the bottom of the Maligne Canyon - the deepest accessible canyon in Jasper National Park, where we will explore frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and incredible ice formations. We will learn about Jasper’s Maligne Valley, Karst topography, and the mystery of the Jasper’s disappearing Medicine Lake. The frozen lakes and rivers provide a great backdrop for the elk, deer, moose, wolves, sheep and coyotes that are still very active in winter. Renowned for its breathtaking dark sky, Jasper is the perfect place to embrace the night and whether you want to stare into the Milky Way or watch an awe-inspiring aurora. Jasper’s dark sky is exceptional during the winter; we gather under the dome of the Jasper Planetarium. The Planetariums’ experienced astronomy guides will guide us on a tour of the cosmos. Specializing in the night sky above Jasper, visitors have the chance to see the stars above Jasper regardless of the weather. This is a great opportunity to take in a closer look at the heavens over the lakes, canyons, glaciers, and mountain tops of the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world.

From the latest designer brands to outdoor gear, there is something for everyone. If you are looking for something special, a visit to one the galleries to take in the local artwork may be what you are looking for. This afternoon we will gather for a 3-hour Downtown Foodie Tour that will take us to four local eating places, visiting points of interest and taking in some of Jasper’s tastiest tales along the way. At each restaurant, we will be able to try a top dish and a perfectly paired drink to get a real experience of Jasper’s food scene. This evening we will take a spiritual journey as we enjoy some friendly conversation, reflection, and listen to the heartbeat of Mother Earth with Warrior Women. Today we will have a photography experience and take some beautiful photos of the Jasper winter landscape. We will have a photography guide to teach us how to use our camera and take a scenic drive to take some lasting keepsakes from the tour. This afternoon we will visit the 23-metre Athabasca Falls, a jewel of the Canadian Rockies. Although the falls are not very high by Canadian Rockies standards, the sheer size of the river makes it one of the most powerful falls to be found in the mountain national parks. Pouring over a layer of hard quartzite, the falls have cut into the softer limestone beneath, carving intricate features, including potholes and a short canyon. Flowing from the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca River is the largest river system in Jasper. In 1810, David Thompson, Canada's premier mapmaker and explorer, plied the Athabasca in search of a viable fur trade route to the Pacific Ocean. Discovering Athabasca Pass in early January 1811, David Thompson's route helped establish Canada as a country that spans the North American continent. Winter provides a completely different experience of the Athabasca Falls and instead of water rushing over the rocks, we may see a frozen cascade of ice reaching down to the gorge. The area is far more peaceful during winter too, as fewer people visit that time of year. We may have to trudge through some unpacked snow to reach the falls viewpoints.
