The Yukon – ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’! Famed for its pioneer history and legends of the gold rush, it also features a magical opportunity to learn about the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. This rugged and beautiful Territory is home to the nations of the Gwich’in, the Tagish, the Kaska Dena, the Northern and Southern Tutchone, the Tlingit peoples, and several more. Further afield, there are members of both the Metis and the Inuvialuit peoples. As Canada starts to take the steps to recognize and reflect on the challenges of its Indigenous groups with the introduction of a national Truth and Reconciliation day, now is the perfect time to immerse yourself into the rich cultural history of our First Nations, Metis and Inuit people. In Whitehorse, our itinerary includes the cultural centre of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, affiliated with the Southern Tutchone Tribal Council. The Learning Centre in Carcross represents the art, culture, and history of the Tagish First Nation. In Dawson City, there is the opportunity to visit the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre to gain insights into the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, members of the Hän (Athabaskan) linguistic group. All of these cultural centres aim to educate about the traditional ways of life of these nations and provide a deeper sense of connection to the challenges they face today.
