Jasper National Park is not only a beautiful section of the majestic Canadian Rockies, but it is also the world's largest accessible Dark Sky Preserve - "accessible" meaning that it has a town with services within the limits of the preserve, the picturesque town of Jasper itself.
Dark Sky Preserves are designated areas that are actively protected from artificial light, making them the best places in the world to view the wonders of the night sky. There are 17 in the world and Jasper National Park is the second largest overall.
Jasper hosts the Dark Sky Festival annually in October, to celebrate and educate about this amazing natural beauty and help people to experience it firsthand. One of the best places to learn about the sky is at the Jasper Planetarium, where you can view the sky with the largest telescopes in the Rockies.
